Short Stop

For many people the words
"Short Stop"
Summon up an image of baseball, of sports.
But for me these words bring a
Sort of reverence, of finalty.
These strange words,
"Short Stop"
have a dawning clarity about them.
In baseball, a position designed
to bring the runner up "short" of third,
"Short Stop"
but for me they hold a meaning
that most could never understand
or hope to comprehend. Because all
that's waiting for me up those wooden steps
are a masked man, a tight noose, and a
"Short Stop"
