Around and Around

I am standing on a snow-covered mound, my black dress sparkling in the moonlight. I am twirling around and around. My outstretched arms, reaching for someone out of reach. Snowflakes fall softly around me. Some land on me and melt against my skin.

Around and around I twirl.

Faster. Faster. I am a blur, my black dress flaring out. I stumble and fall. I am on my knees, crying. I reach one hand out towards the shadows. He appears out of the shadows and stares at me, hands behind his back. My hand is still outstretched towards him, my tearful eyes pleading. He smirks at me and turns away.

“Please don’t leave me…” I plead softly. He stops and turns back to me. He looks at me with empty, cruel eyes. He is still smirking at me.

“What makes you think I will stay?” He whispers harshly. I flinch. My hand drops, my heart stops. He smirks again and turns away and disappears into the shadows. I let him go this time.

I stay kneeling in the cold, wet snow. Snowflakes gently fall all around. I slowly get to my feet and stand, my bare feet numb from the cold. I stare at the spot that he had become engulfed by the shadows. I raise my eyes towards the dark clouds. My arms slowly drift up and oh so slowly I start to twirl again.

Around and around I twirl.

Faster. Faster. Faster still. I am a blur. The cold envelopes me like a cloak. Ice slowly replaces the blood in my veins.

Around and around I twirl.

Faster. Faster. Faster I twirl. I am a blur. I stumble and fall. I lay on my back, staring at the spinning world above me.

Around and around it twirls.

Slower. Slower. Slower until it stops. I stare at the now still world, my heart has stopped. Blank, glossy eyes stare at the cold world with a hatred that comes from a broken heart.
