On One Fateful Night

This is one of my entries in this poetry contest.

Undone is the promise of the forgotten vow
To protect and guard against ill wishes to the well
These wishes, but pennies in a puddle of dispair
To reflect what is present to only those who dare

They give no answers for the ones who ask
And the questions are not voiced in fear of what will come back
Memory is fresh, hanging ignored on a rusted nail
Passerby, keep your eyes to yourself and mind away from those that fail

The commotion of the police chase, so vivid in one's head
Self-degrading for the game that should long be dead
The dynamics and the rules are surely always bent
The boundary disregarded as the days came and went

Fleeing scenes must be done discreetly or someone might catch a glimpse
But you're always sure to leave a lingering scent for your audience

And the puppets with their hands tied, hang with drowning hearts
To know the one they trusted played them from the very start
