Porcelain Doll

Porcelain Doll

Hey now, porcelain doll,
who dressed you up in rags?
And tinted so odd colors
throughout your curly hair?
Gave you such a wry smile,
put cracks across your face,
left you in the darkness
to hope for better days.

Was the thought you’d toughen up?
Or was the wish to beat you down?
Perhaps a try to make you change
when in the end, you’re still porcelain.

Rhyme and reason has run out
on your own little charade.
And what will happen to the role,
the one you always played?

Please do tell and let me know
what you planned on doing next.
Since you did this to yourself
but made it too complex.

When all you had to do, doll
was to let them see you break.
Show that you are delicate
but easy to remake.

Fragile doesn’t equal weak,
so patch it all up with glue.
Prove that you can take it,
that you’ll be as good as new.

Because you can try all you want
to disguise yourself
as metal
or stone
or even as a gem,
and even if you do your best
you will never fool them.

So be yourself, you’ll be just fine
as long as you remember
that you are always porcelain.
