Flames

From my seat atop the world, I watch my scenery ignite.
Flames and smoke engulf and choke the stars littering the night
They dive onto the ground and our wishes follow for the ride
The sky is flooded with emptiness but the flames refuse to die
Instead the fiery fingers caress the navy sheet that lays
Stitching up the holes that illuminated our darkest days
They breathe smoke and smoldering ashes into the immaculate shield
Charging forth on ember horses with no intent to yield
Tearing down the weakened barrier separating heaven and hell
For in reality it ceased to exist when humanity fatefully fell;
The light shed upon us through these final days was wasted, all in vain
Displaying not the sweet pleasures in life but rather perpetual pain
Yet all I can feel is a sensation of peace
My world of grey has a splash of light
For in the midst of two worlds on the brink of collapse
It’s a relief to not have to fight;
Don’t concern yourself with trifling things like defeating the inevitable
It’s out of your hands, and though stuck in your mind, still beyond all control
Just sit back waiting patiently and seek the beauty beneath it all
Then find your terminal velocity as you chase the stars and take this fall
A breeze begins to build and the trees start to sway
We’ve lost sight of ourselves, and now we’re blown away
Like the petals off the roses that survive the tragic disaster
Free yourselves from the thorns and look not towards what’s after.
Just hold on to that thread of faith
weak as it may be
for despite the fact that what’s to come is unknown
it must be better than what we see.
