A Rainbow Flies

I’d have to say that more than one comparison’s been made.
To help you understand the love we feel,
[Or think we do]
I’d have to take a guess and hope that I can find something,
That’s just as hard to touch and just as real.
[Or just as true]

Sunlight shatters all the simple insubstantial things.
The particles that make up air we breathe.
We cannot live without it but it’s only there until it’s gone.
It’s only where the line is drawn.
We cross to either side and take back dawn.

Sunlight sets our world alive and steals the frightening shade.
It brings to light the things we’ve never seen.
It makes us squint and tilt our heads to try to see past where it shined.
It’s not something that we can find.
It’s been there all along but we were blind.

Sunlight even gives her gift when everything is black.
Her gaze is soft and gentle as she plays.
She lends the moon her brilliant rays and makes the simple rock shine bright.
They’re there in every darkened night.
So even when the daytime fades they fight.

I’d have to show you something else to make it seem more clear.
Or else I am afraid it’s just too hard,
[‘Cause after all]
I’d have to tell you more than “bright and warm” to give you red.
It’s not something that you can disregard,
[If you recall]

Raindrops tumble to the earth so safe in their own world
Though unaware as deeper they still fall
It takes a while but when they hit the ground they realize where they are.
And they have fallen just how far.
They shatter and the crack becomes a scar.

Raindrops turn the sky to gray and make the world close in
They choke you and refuse to let you breathe.
And now the world is flying by and they can’t see the dreams they kill
They’re soaking through my window sill
Out of control they’re falling faster still

Raindrops stab the solid rock and wear the bright to dull.
Eroding all but strongest parts of land.
They leave a trail where water ran then soak into the sunny air.
And maybe leave a memory there.
The puddles mirror faces that still care.

I’ve shown you all about the dark and light, the different sides.
But in the end there’s one last thing to tell
[It’s where they meet]
For nothing can be good without a counter-part of bad.
And sunlight always shines where raindrops fell.
[It’s bittersweet]

Rainbows only show their wings when cloudy skies have raged.
They tear the smoky blanket into shreds.
And even though the final drops are crawling by and calling out.
The rainbow calms a dying shout.
And hope is slowly mixing in with doubt.

Rainbows prove that stormy clouds are rampant or once were.
They echo all the thunder and the gray.
Completely unaware of what they follow in a recent past.
A history that’s fading fast.
But they ignore the chaos that won’t last.

Rainbows seem to tell the world that it will be okay.
A quiet comfort in the frightening sky.
For something beautiful remains in every scream and every tear.
In every scar and every fear.
In every loving word that they won’t hear.

And maybe nothing perfect lasts beyond the sunny blue.
If you can’t see the clouds, the rain might fall.
[With faint goodbyes]
But sometimes someone finds the flaws, accepts them as they are.
And sees the color’s arc behind the wall.
