Sea Shells

When you walk along a beach
And see a tiny shimmer
Do you ever stop and wonder
What it is that made that glimmer?

Do you stop and
Take a look around
Searching for the shining thing
That’s somewhere on the ground

Do you find that it’s a sea shell
Smoothed over and polished by the ocean blue
And what exactly about that sea shell
Do you try to do?

Do you keep it?
In the end
Or bring it home
To a young friend

So that they
Just might see
The little shell’s
Symmetric beauty

The shimmering shell
Licked, polished, warmed by the sea
The one you’re bringing back
‘Cause I asked for a bit of the ocean you see
