Come Back, Butterfly

She sits on the front porch
And swings her legs freely;
She looks up at the heavens above
And wears a smile on her face.

She drops down from the porch
And lands on her feet;
She walks towards the trees
While she follows the sun's rays.

She enters the wilderness
And comes upon a creature;
An insect with beautiful wings
That has the power to fly anywhere.

It rests on her shoulder
The color of its wings glinting in the sunlight;
Her lavender dress suddenly becomes
A series of rainbow colors.

The little creature flies away from her
And settles down on a lily;
She runs to it
But the insect disappears.

She holds out her hand
But then she knows it's too late;
The flying creature has gone somewhere
Far away from the forest.

All alone, she kneels down and weeps
Then looks down at her dress;
The rainbow-colored silk
Begins to fade slowly.

She cries and cries
And calls out for the insect;
When she finally gave up
She slowly stands up and wipes her tears.
