One Howl From the Avenues

Waking up cold and half-dead
Vile to the eyes of the world
With no one to sleep beside you
No soulmate to lead you home

When numbness seems like the safe route
Life takes a dive into gray
Struggling for some spared quarters
Half-smiling, you just don’t care

In the end you have the alleyway
And its indigo painted nights
To remind you of the dim castaways
Sharing with you such delights

Delights, I say with a weird smirk
For irony pounds the door
Every hour, every minute
When you realize you’re no worse

Than those proudly walking ‘round you
With briefcases, suits and ties
Reminding you with their rude eyes
That they think you have no right

No right to sleep on their sidewalks
No right to sit on their streets
As if, when they too lose everything
They would have some strength to keep

Take one sip from your scotch bottle
But no more, you must get up
For one second crush the hassle
Even now, your life has hope

There are hearts walking among us
Who haven’t lost all compassion
From their kindness you won’t be tossed
They’ll greet you with satisfaction

On your knees you’ve been a long time
Now start your own revolution
Many stairwells wait to be climbed
If you dare put feet in motion

I wanted to make a statement
For the voiceless in our cities
May this longing ridden lament
Smash the heads of their evils

A cry for the homeless victims
A plea for their bashful souls
One blow to their burning soreness
Shout-out to their unseen glows

Four bawls hide beneath the underpass
Three begging sounds reek of blues
Two screams running down the alleyway
One howl from the avenues
