Cities Of Night

By day you remind me of fairy tales
picture perfect and sweet
by night you show your ailments
delicate and weak

the night sky brings out the worst in you
and the best of you all in one
all the things I thought I knew
obliterated under the midnight sun

the streetlamps paint pale shadows
across your tattered face
the darkness is your hideout
laying true and false to waste

there are no more illusions
the real you is discovered
I come to a final conclusion
about the person I've uncovered

vampire, day-walker
stealer of vital life
humanities last-standing mocker
now I know why you bring me strife

I now know what you are
inhuman, without fear
I should've seen it from afar
how could've I ever held you dear?

more alive at night
then you ever were in day
one quick, lethal bite
and I'm left to waste away

you smiled at me and whisper-screamed
"Pick your poison, my love."
I didn't know that the sense I had to leave
was really a gift from above

Okay, I feel the need to point out that I'm not writing a fantasy poem about a vampire
It's a metaphor.
