An Impossible Tragedy

ashes form to dust
in the blink of an eye
like how a beautiful person
can just let go one day and die

they were smiling, cheeks aglow
when you saw them the day before
but when you got that breathtaking call
your once swelled up heart nearly tore

in the building, everything smells like sterile misery
and the hospital sheets are stiff and white
the doctors go about their business
as you mentally shout: fight!

a beeping occurs and you suddenly feel the urge to leave
as everyone bustles about
no one daring to breathe.
a nurse smiles sadly and starts to talk to you.

her words don't make sense
they're tangled and scrambled and not right
you think as your heart builds up a pitiful defense
and you refuse to believe it, running out

it can't be true
they must have made a mistake
just yesterday they were there, smiling with you.
How is it possible they're gone today?
