We Left Each Other In Our Summer Skin

Remember when we painted our faces red
And ran around that boring Halloween?
We thought we were so cool,
Now I heard you're living in the city,
Oh darling, please stay pretty,
But you don't have to remember me;
There are some days
Where I wish you cared enough for me,
But how naive would that be?
Isn't that just the story of boys and girls though?
We're only here to have our hearts broken
And to get lost in some drunken world;
I recall that night when I told you
I was no longer in the mood for games,
And you smiled,
You're eyes crinkling and reflecting the moon,
And you told me that I was just too cute;
Then you gave me a kiss on the cheek,
But then I felt so itchy;
You said it was okay
Because we were still young
And had plenty of time to change;
Then as I watched you walk away
And my mother sang a Sunday hymn,
All I could think was:
"Fuck being human and feeling feelings."
So seasons changed and left me behind,
But as I was trying to get asleep,
One chilly autumn night,
I knew you were thinking of me;
So, then, I got to thinking of you;
The day you left you said
That you'd grown up,
And it'd be to my best interest
If I did as well,
And to this I politely replied
With a simple no,
Before carrying myself
Down the road before you could
See me grow;
Finally I heard it and knew it was time;
It was the passing sound of death;
It went like this:
Summer had ended and we had
Pulled off all of our golden skin,
For a new player,
In which was pale and pink;
We had left each other in our summer skin;
Oh honey, will you miss me
Once you come home
And find that I'm off
With someone new?
