There once was a girl with a smiling disease...

There once was a girl
with a smiling disease.
Even when angry
Her one look was pleased.

She always had a smile
And never a frown,
A perpetual grin
Never turned upside down.

She’d walk in the streets
And people would shout,
“The economy’s falling
Doesn’t THAT put you out?”

She continued smiling
Through the taunts and the jeers,
After all she’d been smiling
For all of her years.

Some thought she was crazy
Others thought she was weird,
Some even suggested
She grow out a beard.

But no hair on her lip
Or furrow in her brow,
Could take away the feeling
That only a smile would allow.

So people accepted
Her odd little blight,
And never really cared
If she was doing all right.

For one that just smiles
Could never show pain,
Except in her eyes;
Brown coloured and plain.

And then they realized something
(That was quite unplanned)
Maybe she’s got something
We don’t understand?

So they started smiling
And found a new joy,
they were ashamed
At what they tried to destroy.

Something that was gentle
And brought warm pleasure
Something to big
To even start to a-measure.

Then more people caught on
And began spreading the glee,
Something everyone needed
Without paying a fee.

The sun seemed much brighter
The air crisp and cool,
And everyone’s temper
Had a day off at the pool.

The girl went missing
Amongst the smilers in town,
Because there was no one to find
Ever wearing a frown

So the smile became
A disease never more,
But a remedy instead
For the people galore.

There is an old man that comes into the place where I work. He has nerve damage in the corners of his mouth that makes him appear to be smiling. At first when I saw him come in to my work I thought he was just a happy person but as we got to talking the corners of his lips never moved and he just smiled as he talked.

As I got to know him he told me that he had nerve damage, but he said he wouldn't want the damage to have contorted his face in any other expression than a smile.

So I wrote this little poem today after getting off work because he inspired me with his little plight.
