Through a Broken Lens

What would it be like to lose the world around
you?

to suddenly be walking in darkness,
to lose everything beautiful in this world
everything that you love or even just
like or admire or appreciate

What would it be like to forget what color looks
like?

to forget if blue is really blue or maybe
your idea of blue could be closer
to pink or even green
to forget the colors of the sunset, or
the colors of the autumn leaves,
the colors of the street, or
to even dream in black and white

What would it be like to forget what your lover looks
like?

to forget the shape of his lips, or
the strong curve of his jaw, or
the gentle swing of his hips
to forget the color of his eyes —
were they bright or were they dark
were they dull or like stars on a
clear spring night
did he have any blemishes or marks
or was his skin as perfect as a
baby right after it’s born

What would it be like to forget the last thing you
saw?

was it your dog, or your Honey
coming in from his Saturday
morning jog
was it a Christmas tree — decorated
in ornaments of glass, or
was it your three precious rings — given
to you by your sweet Honey
for every anniversary past — shining
in the summer sunlight, or
was it your own hand — a hand that
was taken for granted — a hand that
is now a mystery to you

What would it be like to lose the ability of
sight?
