The Darkness

"Don’t let the darkness in at night"
"Don’t let the darkness in at night"
She repeats
So softly in her weak, shaky voice,
As she trembles on the floor
The taste of tears in her mouth;
Blood smeared across her face
Mixed with eyeliner

A simple noise sets her off,
A shriek in the dark
She closes her eyes tight and reassures herself
"He only comes during dreams,
They can’t hurt you anymore"

Light pours in the room,
Like a crack in the door
She clinches her clothes,
And hugs herself tight
She’s filled with worry;
Shaken with fright
A voice can be heard,
Calling her name
Her eyes widen;
It’s not his voice
But he can change

Her cries can be heard as she wailed aloud,
Her mother found her under her bed
Scared out of her mind
She asks what’s wrong
But no answer comes,
For, she can not tell of the evil one

"He haunts me in my dreams"
"His skin is pure white"
"He seeps in through the cracks and windows at night"
"Don’t go to sleep"
"Don’t close your eyes"
"He’ll haunt you like he haunts me"
"You will not survive"
"He is the darkness!"

Another night passes by;
Silent whispers call her name
Urging her to rest
"He won’t come again"
She knows their empty promises,
Tricks and lies
But sleep still calls her through the night
A feeling comes over her;
Controlling her
Pushing her down
Her eyelids fall over her eyes;
Drifting off to sleep
To dream of him in his disguise.

Not exactly one of my best, but I did write it about two years ago.
