Puerto Rico

I lay awake with anticipation
Waiting for tomorrow.
In just a few hours I will be
Leaving for the most enchanted island
In the Atlantic Ocean,
Puerto Rico. I cannot wait
For the excitement I know I will feel
When the plane descends from the clouds.
The first thing I see
Is the protector of San Juan,
El Morro, and I get the sense of
Being home.
My excitement doubles as I lay
On the beach with the
Sun’s rays warming my skin.
As I cool off with a piña colada.
I walk down the street,
Letting the Spanish conversations wash
Over me like a gentle breeze.
I take in all the different
Pastel colored houses on my journey.
At night I sit on the swing
And listen to the unique cries of the coquí.
I close my eyes and picture
My grandparents growing up here
And my father playing in the
Streets every summer.
During the hot afternoons,
I walk among the palm trees eating a piraqua de piña.
I hear the nearby radios playing my
Favorite Reggeton artists
Like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar,
Who sing about the different
Neighborhoods on the island.
At least once I visit the
Little fishing town where my
Grandfather grew up.
As my trip comes to an end,
I began to feel depressed.
I don’t want to leave such a
Beautiful place.
Bu before I leave I must have at
Least one empanalilla and some crunchy,
Crispy chicharrones.
As the plane ascends into the sky,
I look out my window and watch
The beautiful, historic, and enchanted island
Shrink into the blue depths of the water.

I'd like to dedicate this poem to my grandfather who passed away on Oct. 15. This was hard for me to read during class because it mentioned him in it and the day after he passed away I had to read it for a grade. So I'm letting you guys into my life. Hope you enjoy it.

RIP Pop-pop I miss you
