An Elementary Romance

An elementary romance,
Hidden in the silence.
It was her best friend’s brother,
She knew there was no other.
It started at friends,
They saw no ends.
He finally said, “Sure,”
With a smile so pure.
She cautiously took his hand
As they walked toward the sand.
Yet no one knew,
No one had a clue.
They never saw each other,
They were never together.
They never let anyone in,
To what could have been.
If they had been less secretive,
They wouldn’t have been so tentative.
If they had been more open,
They could have been.
As it unfolded and they lost it,
They thought they had to end it.
Oh how they were wrong!
If only they had been strong.
They could have lasted forever.
They had the best thing ever.
They just let it go,
And now they’ll never know.
