An Angel On My Shoulder

An Angel On My Shoulder

Standing at my window
Glowing in the pale moonlight
Is the faint outline of a small figure
Appearing to be watching me from a distant place
Where shivering shadows and calm winds surround her.

I am compelled to look.
At first it’s a strange figure to me
But I know her deep in my heart.

Gone she has been from all mortal presence many years
Yet never has she left my side.
Her smiling eyes sparkle like blue sapphires
With a shimmering happy light
Like my memories that never fade.

I look upon the face
Whose lines of wear and wisdom I always know.
We look at each other.
I wonder why I haven’t seen her for so long
But then I remember the day.

She seems now like a mist gliding over water.
You cannot touch it but you still feel
A soft cold air upon the place where it is.

Her ghostly figure seems at peace
Yet longs for those she loves.
The shadow of death is pale but soft.
I whisper goodnight and she smiles back
Fading into the back of my mind
But always still there.

Now a sparkle catches my eye
Where a precious gift sits forever upon my coat
With a tiny golden angel smiling from its shoulder
Clasping a purple jewel in its hands
Spreading a ray of light across my memory.

Warmth radiates as if from the giver’s very own eyes
Watching over me in love and protection.
The brooch I will always keep-
A gift from an angel who still visits me
And who will be in my heart as long as I live.
