The butterfly

The cocoon was my home
The shell that kept me safe
The darkness that harbored me
As my body changed and my mind matured
Then a crack in the dark
Piercing light woke my slumbering body
Restlessly I rose from the cocoon that now confined me
And took my first wavering step in the new world
I walked and the possibilities rose and bloomed
Like sweet flowers that I could taste and choose from
Choices that swirled around me like patterns on gossamer wings
Wings that would free my body and my mind
From the confines of the lingering doubts cast by lingering memories
The gilded cage that was once my cocoon lay
Deserted and cracked on the ground behind me
As I rose on those beautiful wings
To greet the new day
