A Promise You Cannot Keep

It's night but I can't get to sleep,
I can't stop thinking of you,
It's raining which helps drown you out,
But there's nothing else I can do.

You were my everything,
The reason I lived each day,
Why I went to sleep at night,
Before you walked away.

But you broke your promise,
You're no longer someone I can trust,
It's been so long since I've seen you,
But the memories will not rust.

They're clear and sharp,
Painful and always there,
The way they won't leave me,
It just isn't fair.

You said you'd never leave
Yet you're no longer here to see
Why make a promise you cannot keep?
You said you'd always be with me,

But now all I see is a grave,
And I'm standing here alone,
With nothing to remember you by,
Except your name on the gravestone.
