A Quick Jog

As abruptly as if it were a sound, it swells after only a moment’s hesitation to ensure the safety of what lies outside
It knows I would never let it die
Or sleep for longer than a night
I wake it to make sure it feels alright

At first I wince, and then I smile,
And then I let it run awhile
I let it run onto the virgin page
I leave behind a mark of rage

I let it run onto the floor
I let it run right out the door
As it paces, my heart beats,
Lactic acid fermentation in my knees
