Twisted

Waking up in the morning,
I felt uneasy
Like something would happen.
I brushed it off,
Often getting these emotions
Whenever I wake up after a nightmare.
Got ready for school,
Headed downstairs
To be stopped by a woman
Who hugged me tight.
"I can't believe you're seventeen already."
"I can't believe it either, Mom."
Ate my favorite breakfast meal.
Honk! Honk!
That's my boyfriend,
He's the best.
"Hi birthday girl."
"Hello, Jared."
Kiss on the lips,
Felt weightless.
Off we go.

"I can't believe he asked you out, Heather."
Best friend squealed along with me.
"But he did! Oh! I'm so happy!"
She's happy with the new boy.
School day seemed normal,
Exception of a new year of life.
Sitting in science
Dowsing off while the talking continues,
Until an ear splitting scream shakes my soul.
Who was that?
More screams occur,
Teacher locks door.
Everyone whispering.
"Please, class, quiet down.
I'll call the office to see what going on."
No answer.
"Just remain seated."
Another scream,
Gun shots,
More screams,
Closer this time,
From the room next door.

"Should we call the police, Mr. Larner?"
He nodded and dialed as fast
As his fat, chubby fingers could handle.
"What if we are next? What if we die?"
"Don't worry. Everything will turn out fine, Debbie."
Door slammed open.
Men in ski masks.
"Get down! Put your hands on the ground!"
Following the weapons threat
The man had translated.
What to do?
Where is my love?
"Hey! Get down!"
Teacher shoved to the ground.
Luckily the call was made.
Now we just have to wait,
And hope for the best.

Hours passed.
Police here.
Worry grows.
Despair sets in.
Boredom replaced with fear,
And doubt of life.
"Who's first?"
Grabbed a girl by the hair,
Shoved her to the ground,
One bullet ends her.
Mouths open,
Eyes wide,
Panic spreads,
Tears spill.
"Debbie?" I speak
She's gone,
Why?

Endless waiting.
Glares set in my eyes,
Hatred burns inside me
Begging me for revenge.
I wait for the moment
When it's alright for it to come out.
Three students dead
For talking a word.
Wish this wasn't happening.
Dreaming of happier times.
My turn is up next.
Thinking of strategies,
Solving this dilemma.
Shoved to the ground.
Only three guys in the room.
Gun raised to my head,
Waiting for the moment.

Slipped my feet under the man,
He fell.
Grabbed his gun,
Shot aimlessly at his chest.
Dead on the ground an enemy sleeps.
Aimed for the others,
But was too slow.
One hit my shoulder,
I hit one in the heart.
Shot the other
To make a injury.
They fell to the ground.
All is quiet.

"Grab a gun, Harold."
Pointed to an athletic boy
Who practiced archery.
Headed out of the room silently,
Cloth wrapped around my shoulder,
Pain deep inside.
Ignored the need to scream.
Next door over,
Shot the others until fell.
Grabbed ammo,
Continued to the next room.
All around the school.
We hit one room,
Best friend was in,
Face first on the ground,
Blood around her.
Revenge itched me to pulled the trigger.
I did so.
Taking three more lives
To add to my murder scroll.

Anger boiling,
Half of the school clear.
Others caught on.
Tried to shoot me.
Three holes in my legs,
One skid my stomach,
Bullet lodged in shoulder,
Ear ripped off.
I'm fine.
Partner untouched.
Get through with this,
Shot them dead or unconscious,
Don't care.
Headed to the next room,
Finding my love,
Tears down his face,
Smile of relief set in.
Hugs never felt so good.

School is safe,
Twenty five dead.
Revenge still strong.
Anger rising,
Squeezed through my eyes.
Everyone shaken.
Everyone scarred.
Everyone crying.
Police officers impressed.
Ambulance carried many to the hospital.
I was the last to go.
Kissed my love goodbye.
And watched him wave away
Through the window.
Wished this didn't happen,
Tears still fresh on his face,
Fresh on everyones' faces.

The day was done.
Happy Birthday to me.
Recovering in the hospital,
Wasn't too easy.
It was worth it in the end
To save all the life I can,
And to see his face
When he walked into the room.
"You look great, Natalie."
Giggled at the strange comment.
Kisses never tasted any sweeter.
Best friend gone,
Never said goodbye.
I will, later.
"I love you, Natalie."
"I love you, Jared."
What a twisted day.
