Lucky Us

I don’t want to be here
if I could I’d run away
turn my back on hate, lies, and violence
and never wonder what I’ll miss
our generation is too corrupt to be corrected
our hearts are too cold to feel the warmth of a smile
we don’t know how to love
with no one to love us
we’ve grown up learning second chances are too risky
trust isn’t worth it in the end
and when we’re ready give up
there is no one telling us things will get better
mommy’s got her door closed paying the bills
and daddy went M.I.A. quite some time ago
our only hope is befriending a knife
or caring for a baby to fill the whole that is missing affection
and every life we’ve lost last year has been forgotten
it was just another soulless body
not a loss worth a whole nation’s tears
I admit, we kids are ill-behaved and selfish
but who taught us to act this way?
our lack of manners is only a shield
so when you whip our bare backs it doesn’t sting
we children learned from cigarette burns
and our bruised bodies will run this country
lucky us
