If Only

A new victim of addiction is baited
He hates the monster he's created
He struggles with it every day
Wishing his once-great life away
Dying faster than those without it
Tearing his life away, bit by bit
There's never a moment he doesn't regret
He hates the pressures in that horrid bet

If only he'd listened to himself instead,
If only he'd obeyed the words in his head
"If only," he laughed, knowing his shame
If only life was just a game
Then maybe he could start again
Redo that night the drugs came in
A second chance is what he hopes for
Some way for him to win this war

He's done with all this, he must start anew
He hesitates, doubting he'll pull through
He breaks the cancer sticks in vain
He pours the pills down the drain
A second chance has crossed his mind
A new hope he has come to find
A new way in life, he starts to embrace
"If only," he laughed, new hope on his face
