Interested In Hedgehogs

Fifty summers ago
You broke your golden eyes
In my swimming costume
In the sand
Watching me
Building me
While we teased the sun
And watered the treetops
Giggling
Secretly
Behind our silent surfaces.

The night sparkled
Like the stars or the science
You pondered
I laughed
And I spun in circles
In the dew
Hiding our kiss
Down to the breeze
Of the ocean’s game:
Chinese secret.

Our secret.
Mine and yours,
Visibly locked behind flimsy bars
I could have broken
Scared
And young
And slightly more interested
In hedgehogs.
