White Roses

We met one day, when we were little;
He was on a branch that looked ever so brittle.
I told him be careful, it was all I knew.
He told me he'd just be a minute or two.
He returned with a pretty white rose,
Touched it very gently to my nose.
He told me it smelt like me and asked me for ice-cream,
I agreed and had a blast,
Before I knew it ten years had passed.

We were in collage and studied at first;
He wanted to be a soldier and I; a nurse.
One night he asked me to dinner
But before the night was over-
There was a ring on my second finger

That year we moved in together;
A sweet little cottage where we'd stay forever
I never wanted to say goodbye;
But every few months I’d have to try
Saving people is what we'd wanted to do
And here we were doing it,
Together too.

It stunned me one day when his lieutenant came to my door;
He gave me a letter and didn't say anymore
He was home early; what was wrong?
Millions of tears fell clear and long...
My heart didn't beat while his message I'd read

Here are the words my beloved had said:
"I wrote this letter knowing this day would come,
I had this letter since we were young
Since then I knew you were the one...
Don't cry my love. In your heart I'm still there.
I'd always love you, I'd always care.
I'm not saying forget me; Just live your life through.
Do what makes you happy; what you want to do.
And don't worry about me love; I'll just be a minute or two.
I'll wait forever to find another rose just like you..."
