Falling Off the Edge

Today is the first day of your existence
People crowd around you, crooning your name
You open your eyes, laughing at the people around you
You have no idea what you're about to face in this life

Today is your first day of elementary school
You are excited to meet all new people to talk to
The teacher calls you up to the front of the class
You smile as you introduce yourself, unaware of the coming betrayals

Today is your first day of middle school
You are nervous, and afraid you left behind the best days of your life
The kids are different; crueler than others you've met before
You catch just a glimpse of what's yet to come

Today is your first day of high school
The children you once knew are no longer children
Everyone has changed so much since those days
You begin to fear that you'll change, like the others

Today is your first day of college
You've grown up completely and aren't the same child you once were
You think of the decievers and the decieved
You worry, wondering which of those you are

Today is your first day of your new job
You finally feel the stress of the real world
People are jealous, and try to get rid of you
You drive home and cry, wondering what happened to those people you once loved

Today is the first day you ever felt truly alone
All your friends have hurt you or left you
You begin to wonder how such dramatic changes could occur over the years
You wonder why you aren't just like them

Today is the first day you see life as others see it
You turn into a heartless monster, just like the others
So much time in the real world can corrupt a person
What happened to the loving child you once were?
