Midnight Approaches

I lay in bed, my eyes open wide
Sleep, I know, will not come to me tonight
Slowly, I turn my head to look at the clock
It's exactly 11:30, on the dot
Midnight approaches

I swallow the bile that has risen in my throat
And wipe my hands from the sweat that covers them like a coat
The seconds tick loudly by, drumming in my ears
The sound of time passing is all I can hear
Midnight approaches

Each passing of the minute-hand fills my heart with dread
I want to run, but my limbs are suddenly heavy as lead
Fear swarms in my head like angry bees in a hive
I look at the clock again. 11:45
Midnight approaches

Death, I know, is coming soon
With his presence comes my doom
A cold smile grins on the face of a skull
Long, skeletal fingers will reach out to steal my soul
Midnight approaches

I can't stop myself from looking at the clock one last time
But I wish I hadn't. It's 11:59
A shadowy figure begins to appear
And my heart fills up with terror and fear
Midnight is here
