Can You Wake Up?

Finally you sink into sleep,
Escaping into a world you’ve designed,
Holding all the secrets you keep,
Where reality and fantasy intertwine.

Where your pain becomes joy,
And your weary soul finds relief,
In this bliss they haven’t destroyed,
You’re finally safe in your beliefs.

This place where they can’t hurt you,
And finally you can run around free,
Where you can do anything you want to,
This world is whatever you want it to be.

But darkness invades your mind,
As you wage an internal war,
Your happiness is falling behind,
And you can’t take it anymore.

People have truly made your life hell,
And your only sanctuary is torn,
You wonder if they can even tell,
How much hatred is once again born?

Do they not see what they have done?
They have taken away your security,
You have nowhere left to hide or run,
They destroyed the last of your mind’s purity.

Fight hard, and try as you might,
This internal war is never ending,
Like the war between day and night,
You wish to wake and stop pretending.

Yet this dream resembles your life,
It seems you’ve had it all wrong,
Even in this dream you reach for the knife,
The steel that has made you weak and strong.

You know you can’t run from it all,
As your faded strength takes your voice,
Too weak to stand, you finally fall,
You’ve made your choice.

Everything fades to black,
You’re surrounded by your fear,
You beg to wake and go back,
To make it all disappear.

The pain builds until it’s too much,
Suddenly you release your only friend,
The cold steel so smooth to the touch,
It has finally brought this war to an end.

No more, you give up trying,
For you aren’t as strong as you seem,
No peace nor pain for you’re dying,
Because life is not a dream.
