The Cross and the Crucifix

The lies you told were beautiful
With the promise of eternity
In a kingdom with streets of gold
And gates of pearly white

“Bear this cross,” you said
“And you shall see relief.”
So I agreed
And I wore your cross

But then you added another
And another and another
I was so weak, and I prayed to you
And you gave me another cross still

So I removed those crosses
I buried the rosary
I turned my back on the crucifix
And I gave up my Bible

I looked Heavenwards
And saw your frown
But I’m done living for you
So I walked away.
