Winter Solstice

This frostbitten dream
is unraveling
from the scarlet around
my shoulders
to the evergreen beneath my feet

I take the cold, wrapping
spring around my hips
like a taffeta skirt
hoping and waiting for
the howls
and calls of
summer things
that seem so far away

But this awakening earth
a marvelous birth
of our saviour in his
granduer
how shall I compare?
with my bright eyes
pale skin
and dark hair?
I feel like the mistress of
a warm season come
to romance
a world I still do not
understand still
of my child hood days
of wondering
still

why things die in the cold.
