Flood of Reality

Like a wave crashing over lava,
reality washes over my passions,
turns every dream into rock
and traps them on a mountain in the sky.

My heart clenches,
and my eyes ache to water,
but reality holds me steady,
whispers everything I must have known.

Settle. Idealism begs me to never,
but understanding draws me to
acknowledge only what is
adequate and attainable.

Trembling, I utter the words
every ounce of innocence
left in me dreads to hear,
accepting everything I never wanted.

Like a wave crashing over lava,
reality washes over my passions,
turns my heart into stone
and traps me in a world of what ifs.
