Bait You With My Heart

I'll put you in a cage
And bait you with my heart
You'll strain through the bars
Willing your muscles to stretch
But it's just out of reach,
That idea of soft warmth and happiness
So you decided to wait and wear away at the bars
Wiggling them and kneading them as they loosen and thin
Finally, your patience pays off and the bars crumble
My heart is there, still waiting
Slowly, you move forward, afraid it will vanish
It remains in place, suspended by a string
You reach to touch it, to caress it
And pull away quickly
Shocked at the feel of stone
