The Age Factor

You asked me once, how old I was
And I thought that it was strange.
How you didn't know, or had no clue
That in time, my age would change.

We had a pretty decent talk.
But you blew it with that line.
And since we barely speak no more,
I believe it was a sign.

I think age shoud stay a number.
That it shouldn't matter when it comes to us.
But you keep using it like a shield
Against something that barely was.

Why can't we go back to what we had
And built it up from there?
If you really believed that age did count,
In the first place, why'd you care?

I think you're afraid of what can be,
So you come up with excuses.
Your mind is playing the denial card,
But your heart simply refuses.

Of course, this is a two-way street
And I gotta be honest with you.
I'm afraid of messing whatever we have,
With something I can't undo.

But I believe in taking chances.
To jump the leap of faith.
Because I know we're worth the fight.
And you know it's never too late.

We still have time to make this work.
If that's what you want, my love.
And if you were to ask me how old I am now,
I'd say I'm old enough.
