The Assassin

Caught in the crowd,
Another citizen,
No secrets to speak of,
No tales to tell.

Night time draws on,
The citizen goes home,
Pulls on dark clothes,
Straps on his blades.

The assassin is awoken.

He climbs to the rooftops,
Plots a silent course,
Jumps from building to building,
Onward to his prey.

Scaling a wall,
Outside a window,
Slips through the gap,
Raises a dagger.

The assassin kills.

The lord lies dead,
The assassin escapes,
Changes his course home,
Slips back inside.

Daytime returns,
All is quiet,
Word of a lord's death arrives,
The mission complete.

The assassin feels no guilt.

Caught in the crowd,
Another assassin,
Secrets to speak of,
Tales to tell.
