Shooting Stars

I still remember that night in July: Independence Day,
Early morning with an inky black sky
You point out constellations, belts,
As I lay my head on your chest
And your arm around me
Singing Airplanes
I will never forget.

Laying on the roof of my house
Parents asleep, ignorant
Neither of us exactly
Remember whose
Idea it was

You said you felt like you were dreaming
I was speechless; I felt the same way
But the words just wouldn't come
I was in awe; you kissed my cheek
I didn't have the courage to speak

Later my parents
Called my phone
Ringing on rooftops
Dream is over

As I climbed down the ladder from the roof
I turned to look at you, down below
And you stared into my eyes

As you left, you kissed me goodbye
My reaction was just to hug you
Garage door slowly closed
Image of your car
Slowly erasing

If only I knew that you would leave me
Months later, before we were together
If only I knew that we would be crying on the phone together
Because we live too far away from each other
Because you promised you wouldn't hurt me
Because you broke that promise

Shooting stars in the night sky
I guess that makes us........
Even, we both said at once
Now, we're Odd again
But I don't mind

There was something special about that night
Something special about you
I believe there still is
And I forgive you
