My Best Friend Without Words

When I walked through the door
Our eyes connected with a silent spark.
I felt as though we had met before,
And you greeted me with a friendly bark.

We bonded as friends and grew alike,
Both adoring snow and having a blast.
Growing up with you chasing my bike,
But these moments are now in the past.

I was moving, the day coming soon.
I didn’t want to leave you, my friend, here.
I wanted to stay and watch the moon
Gleaming on the lake from our dirt covered pier.

You were staying in the state
While I was moving cross-country.
I thought that I just had to wait
Until we’d meet again happily.

I cried when we were separated.
Each and every minute I would.
Until each tear had evaporated,
And I no longer could.

The waves crashing along the beach,
Their salty smell like the earth’s perfumes.
Oh how I miss you and each
Of them and the sandy dunes.

The night sky illuminated by the light
Of hundreds of fireflies humming.
You chased them and tried to bite,
But they kept going and coming

I hope to see her again, my sister.
So we may be together once more.
Then I cannot say I miss her,
For we will be just like before.

This was an elegy I wrote for english class about my first dog, Goldie.
We got her when I was seven.
Sadly, we moved to California from New Jersey.
I miss her :(
