Fairy Dust and Candy Pills

A little girl’s lying pitifully on the couch
No one is there; she’s alone in the house.
She’s had a long day; more teasing, more threats.
Isn’t her pain enough for the bully’s needs to be met?

A relief for the pain is so tempting just now.
Breaking a promise; her mom made her vow
Stay away from the booze, pills and powder
But how? She needs them, needs them, her lifeforce.

Up she gets to the forbidden bathroom
Out of the cabinet; orange cylinder, white bag.
Tips out the cylinder and sighs with relaxation
Medicine, take it all away, she begs.

They’re every color, shape, size and texture
Beautiful sugarcandy-pills, so harsh with their taste.
But yet! They were the only comfort
No parent, no friend, could top the capsule rainbow.

Swallow after swallow, pink, red, blue and green
Disappear down her throat; and oh, how she wanted to scream!
Float her away to the magic fairyland, high up in the clouds.
But before she goes on the journey, one last thing.

Two white lines on the edges of a credit card
Up they go, into her, oh God, into her; sparkling fairy dust.
The little girl sighs and leans back, her work here is done
The card tumbles from her hand, the pills shatter on the floor.

Take her to the land of all play and no work
The place of a child, the paradise of an artist
She meets all her friends there, her real parents too
Just a few minutes, just, just a few.

All angels must fall from heaven one day
And the little girl did just that.
Crashing, screaming down, oh God, it was all over
Candy pills, fairy dust, perhaps an old razor.
