Watching It Burn

I could never love you and I made sure to let you know,
But you chased after me and said that you couldn't let me go.
You have no place to blame when I show you my hate
Because you were never a part of my fate.

You were always there, my knight in shining armor,
Even trying to be a good charmer.
You promised me your life, the world,
But all I got was everything hurled
Straight into my face, but I guess I deserved it
For the betrayal that I was so ready to commit.

You open your mouth and push me closer and closer to the edge.
I knew it wouldn't take long to find my way off that ledge.

But something about you caught my attention.
It was something other than your pretension.
Perhaps it was that you actually showed me love,
But what would I know of an emotion that I'm void of?

I regretted it when I tried to get rid of you.
I needed to chase after you before you left my view.
But it was too late--I was always too late.
It seemed karma wanted to act because of my hate.
I sat down to watch you burn to death,
But somehow ended up in the fire myself instead.

(A/N: This was inspired by the song "The End" by Silverstein. Specifically, the lines "I didn't want to save you. I set our house on fire to watch it burn, but I couldn't just leave you there.")
