Fish Girl

I walked along the cold seashore
Hoping to see some ghosts
But instead I found a lone dead girl
Laying on the salted coast

She had seaweed hair
That was dead at the tips
And threaded through with blue
Her eyes were full of water
Her ears were filled with shells
And fish swam through her lips

She had no tail but human legs
And feet covered with scales
Her flimsy dress blew in the wind
Buffeted by wind gales

I knew not what she was
And how she ended up there
Did she die crying in the sea
And wailing with despair?

Did she choke on clumped sand
That clogged up her throat?
Or did she die laughing at the little fish
While hanging over the side
Of a boat?

Did she drown herself?
Did she take her own life?
Or maybe she was killed by misfortune
And got caught down with strife

I pulled her back into the water
So nobody could see
This dead fish girl all alone
Surrounded by seaweed

I had been walking along the cold seashore
Hoping to see some ghosts
But instead I found a lone dead girl
Laying on the salted coast
