One Night

I listen to the steady breathing of my little brother
As I lay on my bed, waiting for sleep
Suddenly the breathing turns into the empty sound of silence
I see nothing but the sweet color of black
Voices begin chanting, their sound surrounds me
“You are nothing, you are nothing…”
I cry out to the voices
“How do you know what I am when you don’t know me?”
The voices stop chanting and speak as one
“We are the voices in your head
We are the voices of your cold, darkened heart
We know every fiber of your being
And you are nothing”
The heat of their breath encases my body
And pull me down to the world below
The warmth of the fire comforts me as I fall into a sleep like no other
I see and feel nothing for minutes on end
All I hear is the steady breathing of my little brother
And the beating of my heart as I lay on my bed, waiting for sleep
