The Chain

She walks unseen through night as black,
Past the light in the shadows,
Dare she not look back.

She’s wandered alone in an ancient time,
Guards following behind her close,
Chains attached to creatures of her kind.

At night I wake to silence in the air,
She walks past my bedroom,
A cold, blank, and lifeless stare.

Counting stars for mistakes well done,
Forgiveness is absent,
Revenge as fiery as the sun.

Night falls again as a thousand times before,
Yet she keeps walking,
Her chains dragging along the floor.

Her cries are echoes never to die,
Apologies never heard,
As were the truths – masked by every lie.

The past is her present, her future the same,
And all of her sins –
Each a link in the hundred-mile chain.

Destroying lives of all she meet,
She’s left with no one,
To walk with down this empty street.

Dragging her chains as she walks alone,
Wandering the universe,
Forever to roam.
