Memories of the Keys

Sailing on the open sea
Just you and me.
The salty spray in my hair,
I just don’t give a care.

Way out on the ocean
I guess we need some sun tan lotion!
Sailing around in the open sun,
You were right, this is fun!

Stop! Here’s the beach,
We can rest and eat a peach.
Rather go fishing? Quick, pull in your line!
What did you catch in the salty brine?

Splashing in the waves,
Do you think there could be underwater caves?
When you went under, what did you find?
Wow! A conch! One-of-a-kind!

We’d best board the boat now,
“Hey! Over there! It’s a sea cow!”
You’re very impressive with your amazing eye,
I’m sure you’d make a good ship spy!

Maybe we could camp out here,
Watch out for the Key Deer!
Here looks like a good place to stretch out.
Or we could walk around, up and about.

But still sailing around the Keys
Was still enough to please.
Seeing the soft sand,
Was like being in fantasy story in a far off land

I don’t want to end this trip soon
We’re too busy exploring sand dunes.
After we gently fall asleep,
We’ll defiantly have memories of the Keys to keep!

This was for a contest in my school. We do this thing called "One Book, One School" (everyone in the school reads the same book). You had to write a poem and the winner could have lunch with the author of the book we were reading: The Great Wide Sea.
