My Lullaby

A lullaby I sing tonight,
That by and by my love will fly.
From mountain top to valley low,
And never fear the lonesome road.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
So that my dear, her dreams can find.
Protect her from the snares of dark.
Let her keep her peace of heart.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
A mournful song for days gone by,
For up, and up she grows.
Fast comes the day when she will know.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
To hide her from darkness and strife,
For times are coming fast,
From which she cannot hide.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
In hope that I can keep her heart,
That what in tender youth she learns,
Will never leave her nor depart.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
Her youth is drawing on its end.
I fear tomorrow I shall find,
My child gone, a woman in her stead.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
But she is gone, and I am here.
Just this morning she was wed,
To a man who always dried her tears.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
But ne’er again I fear, and find.
My daughter has her daughter own,
She’ll sing a lullaby tonight.

A lullaby I sing tonight,
My love I pour, for her.
In hope that she will someday find,
This song which I have left for her.
