The Tale Of A Lady In Grey

She goes and lights a cigarette,
Words hanging off her tongue
It seems like she's forgotten
What it feels like to be young
She takes a drag and sighs it out, leans her head upon her hand
How did things get like this?
She doesn't understand

This life that before, once seemed so full,
Is now dreary, dull and bleak
It's only Monday, and her hope is gone
She can't last another week
Her clothes are wrecked, her hair's a mess, and she's missing out on sleep
She's faded from the promises made, that were too hard to keep

Her best years are behind her
Feels like she's growing old
Her years have not been kind to her
Yet she used to be so bold
She dreams about the happy days
Where she seemed so carefree
Now her face is just a sullen mask
For everyone to see

This life that before, once seemed so full,
Is now dreary, dull and bleak
It's only Tuesday, and her hope is gone
She can't last another week
Her clothes are wrecked, her hair's a mess, and she's missing out on sleep
She's faded from the promises made, that were too hard to keep

A failed marriage, or three, or four
She's lost the will to live
The years drag on, she wonders why
She's not got much more to give
Her hope is gone, and prayers don't work
She's given up all faith in God
Her days are dead, her times run out
There's no path she hasn't trod

This life that before, once seemed so full,
Is now dreary, dull and bleak
It's only Wednesday, and her hope is gone
She can't last another week
Her clothes are wrecked, her hair's a mess, and she's missing out on sleep
She's faded from the promises made, that were too hard to keep

The moral thought is this, my friends
Be the back that doesn't bend
Its better to grow old gracefully
Than reach a cold dead end
For what becomes of our down-hearted lady?
Well, I'm afraid it's true
Her fate was up to history,
But yours? It's up to you.
