Behind My Mask

Behind My Mask
By: Kennedy Convery
I remove the mask
Revealing someone completely new
Beauty with tranquil eyes
A heart stopping smile
I only see a girl
Hurt, confusion, and anguish
Bloodshot eyes tell a story
Not knowing what to believe
Feeling nothing other than love
Now
Ripped in two
Like a broken heart
Missing the other half
Where did he go?
Has he run off at last?
Like prey running from its predator
Nothing’s the same
She’s a part of him
Thoughts, emotions, memories
Ignoring the pain
Which finds its way back
Picturing his face
Fake smile, forced laugh
She feels his pain
Like a needle piercing skin
Anguish and Confusion
Not much difference
Except…
He remains silent
She wants to talk
He pushes her away
She keeps coming back
Signs of love
Unreturned
Avoiding problems,
Running away
Confronting hers, fixing his
Unwilling, unbelieving
Thinking “why try?”
Yet believing in him
That he can conquer anything
“anything is possible”
Finally blinking away tears
The person disappears
Time for a new day
But she knows
Night will quickly follow
