When We Had Wings

When we had wings,
We could touch the sky,
We soared like birds,
Clouds didn’t seem high.
Our souls were light,
Our hearts were pure,
We were so innocent,
And then our world tore.
The allure of power,
The temptation of money,
The pull of these things,
Was no longer funny.
Our wings turned black,
And rotted away,
We didn’t understand,
Why things ended this way.
Now we look up,
At the birds in the sky,
And hope they don’t end up like us,
Unable to fly.
