The stillness of a mirror's eyes.

The paleness of her reflection
was enough to alert the authorities.
What the commotion was for,
it's anyone's guess.
Later, everyone said she was fine,
the mirror was just tilted a bit too
far towards the light
and she hadn't seen the sun in years
and there was a reflection from
the water, a trick of the eyes.
She thought she was drowning, the report said.
What they didn't tell me
was that I was drowning
and they were drowning
too.
The police left after the mystery
darkened their thoughts,
but they're breathing water in
like air's outdated
and who will save
us?
I don't think I'll be heavy
enough to sink.
I hug the shore as if
it has hands
that can soak in my pleas.
