Midwinter

I’m here under the sky of midwinter
My shadow hangs in the balance
I watch it play
I watch it cry
I watch its freedom die
Stolen by the surrounding violence of the trees
It’s something impossible to understand
The laughing echoes beyond my ears
I wait alone in the dark for the rest of me
Being careful was not an option
Never once did they listen
My darting shadow shakes
Tripping, falling, drowning in the black lake
Laughter of the damned shatter through the remains of my glass heart
The midwinter weather acts as midwinter should
Cold white flakes fall among the trees
It falls upon my sleeping soul
For I cannot be whole until the shadow returns
It had haunted my dreams for many moons,
Reality had sunk in far too late
This is not the way
I believe no more
Violence was the culprit here
Kill it here
Watch the trees cast shadows
Gloomily in form
Rebuild the fortitude I never had
My shadow is formidable in being
I do not wish for it’s pain to engulf me once more
The midwinter air chills me down to what’s left of my very heart
