Between Houses

There was so much of a fuss
about that damned house:
We were in and out and in again,
then we joined you in the wrong house
and ended up staying
"a rather long time".

We weren't going to stay for long,
nor did we, just the same as you,
but events got in they way,
as they always do and the couple,
the baby and the cats numbered two
became a fixture. There was enough room.

New Year came around again before
we finally moved into that stupid house.
It was only then, unpacking everything
from the cardboard it had been boxed up in,
that we realised between one house and another
we had lost a whole damn lot.
